To write, or not to write...

April 16th 2009 12:10
Is it nobler, to suffer damning silence, to stand solitary, in muted penumbra, awaiting literary fertility? Is it far more chivalrous, to spare internet neophytes, the gruelling dredging of word slurries, all fruitless of hope, enlightenment or entertainment?

Should we forewarn, 'herein lies a trove of truculence, devoid of merit', or leave it be, reader beware?

EULOGY FOR NINA

December 6th 2008 17:35
A great mentor and friend of mine passed away last weekend, I found out Wednesday evening, the night before the funeral. My friends asked me if I would write a eulogy for their mother, Nina, as I was unable to attend the funeral, due to tryanny of distance. Here then, is my eulogy, written with love, humour and respect, for a woman, second mother, friend and great mentor of mine, Nina.

(I have not included the family surname out of respect for their privacy)

Onion Skins: Chapter 3

August 24th 2008 06:01
My family, extended and immediate, never found out why Great Uncle met Al Capone, or why he was given the pearl handled Derringer. Interestingly, such a gun was noted as being possessed usually by "pimps" or other criminal types, and women, neither of which Great Uncle was, however, there may be a story of sorts to do with the latter, as he had more than a leaning to the feminine side, as family legend would have it, which he chose to keep as discrete as possible, except on his wedding night.

Great Uncle decided to marry a young woman, probably at the urging of his mother. The girl may have worked in his rarely visited legal practise; he allegedly appeared there for one hour each week, on a Tuesday, before a very long lunch. All went well until the honeymoon, when Great Uncle announced that his best man was accompanying them

ONION SKINS: Chapter 2

August 19th 2008 16:09
"Tommy Tickle Tail" was not some weird, perverted old relative hiding in the attic of the gracious old home mother now resided in, but a woven wire switch, a horse whip in fact, that had a nice decorative collar at the handle and came to a fine point at the striking end.

A side saddle whip similar to Tommy

ONION SKINS

August 18th 2008 17:44
I just received word from my Aunty Mary, my Uncle is dying. Although we were never emotionally close, as he lived in another state and over the last forty years I saw him rarely, I did feel a pang of regret, and a lot of empathy for my Aunt, stoic to the end.

My Cloud Appreciation Society Membership Certificate

Hello, my name is 'fog' and I am now a proud member of The Cloud Appreciation Society! Recently, when scouring for free images of clouds, I came across the Society site. It filled me with awe to find this small group, of such singular interest, and I found the perfect cloud photo for my poem, "Kangaroo Cloud". See my poem and photo: LINK HERE I am indebted to the Society and the photographer, Mister John Lamb for allowing me to use his photo entitled, "Monkey on Skies." Well, I saw a kangaroo

NEW AMAZING ICE BERG PHOTOS!!

May 27th 2008 14:54
I have found some more amazing ice berg photos. These bergs range from blue striped, to a really bizarre 'glass' one, to an atmospheric etherial shot of a berg archway; it looks like the ghostly portal to another world, in fact, that is exactly what it is!

ENJOY

Find following four amazing photos of ice bergs, that have extraordinary stripes and discolourations within them. Some look like marble, one looks like it is a huge hard boiled lolly (candy) swirled with different colours. They are beautiful and incredible.

DAMMIT!! keep fingers crossed I can use the photos again!

The party was in full swing. Parents chatted animatedly in small groups inside and on the rear patio, where their children played a game of ping pong. As I scanned the party goers, I became aware that two of them were not engaged in light hearted banter, nor were they smiling.
KGB! School boy spies?

They were staring at me

The Headmaster, who was also the head monk, titled Prior, swaggered slowly towards me, his face a surly mask of malice. He stopped beside me and then looked out to the entire senior school assembly; behind me was a long line of monks, many wearing their long cloaks, the hoods hiding their faces, the scene was terrifyingly Dickensian.

an alma mater of olde

“We NEED troika bells!” the director snapped. “Umm…troy...karr bells?” I responded hesitantly. I didn't want to appear ill educated and idiotic, however, at least I had some idea of what the director was demanding I obtain, they were bells. “NO! TROIKA!!..T!..R!..O!..I!..K!. .A!..Get them on the rehearsal tape, Monday should be soon enough.”

It was Friday… Such is the life of a novice stage manager, or assistant as I was then, known in the industry as an ASM, for short; in all but personality of course, but sadly personality was kind of discouraged in that area of work. I think I was in the wrong course…so did a lot of others

In Leonine Eyes

April 14th 2008 15:33
Now it sits before me, on my desk, Rothschild's Titana box; age worn, yet its labels are still intact. Inside the lid, a gaudy gold coin and family crest display, centre of which is she, Titana, I presume. It is an old cigar box, which I rescued today at my dearest friend's house, who had died last year.

The executor invited my mother and me to come over, while my friend’s possessions were taken away for auction. My mother had to collect a drawing she did for her

Well, it comes with age and an ever dwindling group of close, 'real' friends, and the knowledge that you are one step closer to the gaping grave! When that birthday came along, when we were young, it was anticipated with some excitement, well, for a lot of us, some not so much. My trouble was, my family was far from affluent in the early days (and through misfortune has now returned to that level!!), so I used to dream of what I wanted, of things much grander, than I would ever dare ask for.

In fact, I have always had a problem in that area. From early days I knew what was possible and what was not. We grew most of our vegetables in our backyard. We had a lemon tree, orange tree, mandarin tree, almond tree, plum tree, nectarine tree and assorted veggies. Oh, and a bottle brush tree, that got festooned with honey bees in summer, which made passing it a little treacherous

Should I become a PROFILER?

April 3rd 2008 05:52
We've all heard of them. PROFILERS! They are the ones who study the behavioural characteristics of psychopaths, maniacs, rapists and even white collar criminals. An area as exciting as it must be repulsive at times! So, yes I am considering applying for the job, why not? It would bring great daily challenges and also supply the much missed excitement I used to enjoy in an average day, when I worked in film. Besides, it will be doing the community a great service, who could ask for more than that?

So, now to study the job description in the application...back soon with my personal report to the Orble at Large community...wish me luck!

May all your dreams come true! Well, at the very least in your sleep! One always needs some satisfaction! Orble has been an interesting little journey, and I have 'met', befriended and been befriended by some arresting characters to say the least!

So, to my friends here, and to those others who silently read Orble posts from the side lines, may your Christmas Day go without too much drama

IMAGINE 27 years ago. Do you remember?

December 7th 2007 14:03
John Lennon shot down today (8th Dec), 27 years ago, that really amazes me! I remember it vividly. Then seeing people sitting on the steps of the GPO, in Martin Place, singing old Beatles hits, as I walked through the city centre.

It was eerie, people slowed in their pace, and looked toward these neo-hippy-esques and others who loved Lennon enough to be there, so as to find some companionship to share the grief they felt, that a whole lot of people felt, through all age groups. For by this time, Lennon's work had melded into everyone's consciousness, whether they were a fan or not

Darling Jake is gone...

November 17th 2007 14:39
I am not in a poetic mood, nor can I muster something suitable in prose, I am still numb. I was emailed two hours ago, my dear pal Jake, the son of a good friend of mine, has died. His body was found in a park, all alone, I can't believe it, only 26.

Jake was a sweet natured boy, with a gentle sense of humour. He grew into a tall, handsome young man. He had warm dark brown eyes, a good natured smile and a friendly soft laugh. He had friends and many girlfriends too
