Congratulations Prime Minister Gillard!
June 24th 2010 06:30
History has been made in Australia today, as Julia Gillard, the Deputy Prime Minister, was sworn in as Australia's 27th Prime Minister and the first woman voted to that august office.
Australia now has as its titular head, HRH The Queen, Governor General Ms. Quentin Bryce, and now Julia Gillard as Prime Minister, Australia has ceased to be a parochial paternal society and has entered a new age of feminism, without burning any bras!
This is quite an achievement.
And The Right Honourable, The Prime Minister Gillard, has stated she is determined to steer Australia on a steady and careful course. PM Gillard has appointed The Treasurer, The Honourable Wayne Swan, as Deputy Prime Minister.
PM Gillard has asked that the mining industry cease its TV advertisements attacking the government over the contentious new super profits tax, and in turn the government will cease, today, its own advertisement campaign, in response BHP -Billiton has ordered its advertisements to stop forthwith.
This is a good start, and the doors of government are open to negotiate the terms of the intended new tax, the consultation process is to be headed by Deputy PM Swan
PM Gillard also admitted that the government, under The Honourable Kevin Rudd, had "lost its way", which the PM just repeated in her opening address to Parliament.
PM Gillard has also stated she acknowledges the worry ordinary Australians have regarding our borders being entered by asylum seekers and opportunistic others, and that the borders will be fully protected. PM Gillard also acknowledged the service, and ultimate sacrifice, made by our military in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
PM Gillard comes across as strong, determined, realistic and a good communicator. I think our new Prime Minister will make a fine leader for our nation; we are in good and safe hands.
I must also say that our now ex-Prime Minister, The Honourable Kevin Rudd, had some major faults; he worked too hard and kept oversight and control over too much, and when those being paid to serve him and the nation failed to do their work properly, or diligently, like not providing a cooked meal for a long haul flight, The Hon. Rudd became angry, and the press attacked him for this, holding up some hapless steward as being the victim, when in fact it was the PM who was being victimised.
Some members of the Federal Government bureaucracy have blood on their hands, as they have been active in a political agenda against the elected government of the day.
Today I have seen the once mortal enemies of The Hon. Rudd, some right wing press members, admitting what was once a source of their criticism and ridicule is now seen as a fine attribute. Much has been achieved by The Hon. Kevin Rudd’s administration, but he made a serious mistake, he failed to keep the public aware of the achievements and he failed to properly consult and engage the mining industry.
The last time the mining industry in Australia was ignored by government was The Honourable Whitlam’s administration, and we know how that ended!
If I may be so presumptuous, one important bit of advice; Prime Minister, never lose your sense of humour, or your wily and cutting wit! Aussies love a laugh and more importantly, we appreciate a wit that cuts to the heart of a matter, rather than obfuscating a truth.
Thank you Mister Rudd for your tireless service and good luck Prime Minister Gillard, the nation wishes you well, and much success in representing all members of Australia.

I am looking forward to it, and what a momentous day it is, I especially look forward to seeing her deal with that charlatan christian with a pitch fork Abbott! I caught one clever barb at his expense today, in her first hour in Parliament.
It was sad to see Rudd there, on a back bench looking wretched, I was amazed actually, as I expected he would not be there at all, but back at the Lodge guzzling a few bottles of Grange Hermitage.

Bit of a lol moment there
But yes, I couldn't be happier with this news! I reckon she'll be a brilliant leader (on account of her experience, accomplishments and personality) but the real test will be in the next few months as she gets the country back on its feet.
It'll be really interesting to see if she's voted in when it comes to election time too. Go Julia!

For the first time I feel like I have something to be proud about. A woman leader that exuded all the qualities you spoke about in your blog. Someone all women can aspire to. She has begun a path that we can all follow. And she has shown by example, that if she can do it any of us can achieve the impossible. Whatever our dreams are!
I might sound optimistic but that's exactly the sort of person that I am & what Julia has inspired within me. She has woken my sleepy feminist within!

isn't it fantastic! I too hope she whthers the gathering storm around her, Abbott will try anything and everything to bring her down, which surely must conflict with his 'christian' ethics?

tanx muchly,
and I am so thrilled to read your response, you should write to her and let her know, because that is definitely one of her most cherished ideals, to be a good role model and an inspiration for young women today.

I did write a Orble blog about her. I was truly inspired by another Orble-er who wrote a blog about Kevin Rudd.
Maybe I should find a way to get that to her. I think politics aside this is a huge step forward - one I am sure she is well aware of. But I am so moved by this that I hope she does make it to the Central Coast because I would sure like to be there & say hello to her. For the first time in my life I feel engaged with it all & would love to help in the cause of getting our first woman Prime Minister elected by the Aust. people!!!
In my Orble blog I even manage to make the link between her & Queen Elizabeth I. Geez, it's so exciting!!

Australian Take
Julia Gillard has taken a step which could have been absolute political 'death' to her.
I'm dead interested to find out why KRudd had to be deposed the night before he went to G20.
All that is quoted by the commentariat is: Julia Gillard says it is in the 'National Interest'.
What really gets me is this group of inexperienced young people who had more to say than the elected members and ministers.
Were they running Australia's elected government from behind closed doors? Shutting out Ministers! Good Grief! Unbelievable!
As for the Mad Monk. Does he know nobody's listening to his rabbit droppings? Some cleaner will come into 'Bonehead Castle' and sweep them out Monday morning.

hehe! Very funny.
And you do draw out excellent points, I too am waiting to see what the "PM" version of Gillard will be, she is a clever politician, certainly more savvy than anyone else in her government, but being a clever pollie does not necessarily translate into being good for the strugglers, as we found out with Howard.
And very interesting, I did not think of the G20 aspect, I suppose Rudd had become such a self obsessed control freak he was considered a danger to our national interest, in that, at G20 we get a lot more press attention o verseas than we normally do, in fact normally we get nothing overseas, maybe a cute marsupial story every now and then...
I think it is the lessons learnt from Whitlam's disaster with the mining industry that played a card into the deal.
My father was in that industry, and I knew some of the key government players during Whitlam's truncated tenure.
At one point, after the Minister for Mining, Conner, had refused to address the international and local mining companies at their conference, specially held in Oz, to address the new government's policy intentions, Connor also refused to attend to listen to the companies plans, he wouldn't even send someone to listen to them on his behalf, well, for a short moment, I became a defacto emissary between certain mining groups and a Cabinet Minister, who was a friend.
I can tell you, Whitlam's government became public enemy number one with the USA, and it was no surprise they got dumped.... so it does not surprise me they axed Rudd before he put his foot in his mouth on the world stage.
