The Cloud Appreciation Society
August 5th 2008 09:47
Hello, my name is 'fog' and I am now a proud member of The Cloud Appreciation Society! Recently, when scouring for free images of clouds, I came across the Society site. It filled me with awe to find this small group, of such singular interest, and I found the perfect cloud photo for my poem, "Kangaroo Cloud". See my poem and photo: LINK HERE I am indebted to the Society and the photographer, Mister John Lamb for allowing me to use his photo entitled, "Monkey on Skies." Well, I saw a kangaroo...
The idea of a Society solely devoted to the passive and placid 'sport' of observing clouds in all their wonderful shapes, colours and types, may seem a rather eccentric and an almost typically English useless pursuit, however, their cloud photography is mesmerizing!
Everyone, I am sure, at some point in their childhood has laid on their back and stared up at a cloud filled sky on a sunny lazy afternoon and watched the clouds form and change shape, have challenges to see who could see a particular cloud animal and for some, who were more scientifically minded, spotting and naming clouds by their scientific name, such as Cumulus Nimbus, or Cirrus.

There are rules to being a member of The Cloud Appreciation Society, for instance, on their website; one must only write about and/or post photographs of clouds, nothing else! One is allowed to write poetry about clouds and post paintings of them too. I, for one, have written many poems about clouds over the years, so I will endeavour to post them on the official site. Visit The Cloud Appreciation Society today:LINK HERE

I urge everyone to join The Cloud Appreciation Society!
Cloud watching is fun!
So is being a member of its official Society, as it attracts wonderfully eccentric and interesting people, and the pastime of cloud watching may be done in any state, intoxicated or sober and, of course, it is an excellent panacea for the furrowed brow, ploughed with worry in these financially troubling times; allow the graceful pageant of clouds to fill in the emotional troughs in your life.
Just lay back on a deck chair, or on a grassy hillside, hang out a window, or stare up from a rooftop garden and watch the sky parade float by, let your imagination see the incredible zoo that often inhabits the clouds above.
I think I should start a local chapter of The Cloud Appreciation Society! Anyone interested in joining?
By the way, when you join the official international Cloud Appreciation Society, (it is extremely cheap, 4 British pounds plus postage, just $12 or so Aust. dollars postage included), you are sent a welcome letter, a certificate and a badge, which I am proudly wearing as I write. The official site has lots of interactive things to do, and a communtiy to chat with... only about clouds please!
Three cheers for all our gorgeous clouds, the life givers!

What a peculiar topic
You know, I hadn’t really thought about this before, but heaps of my favourite photo’s are ones with clouds in the shot!
When I was in Melbourne a couple of years ago, I snapped this shot through the open sun-roof of my car... it’s saved as my wallpaper lol
And here's just a random shot from Quebec City...
And now Sydney lol
lol sorry for hijacking your blog... I did restrain myself; i've dozens more inadvertently captured cloud shots (admittedly, not quite as good as the ones you've posted).

Yes, I have just read another Orble blog where that fine city was referred to as such.
Does anyone else get the feeling the inmates are starting to run the asylum?
Sorry, fog, I am digressing, will shut up now...

I didn't really need to know that, thanks...
Now that I DO know about it, it doesn't matter - these people are few and far in between. Maybe Orble is just a magnet for them, for some reason. Whatever - I only pay attention to a select number of blogs and leave the rest be.

yes the much ignored yet absolutely necessary and often Rubenesque clouds above our heads deserve more patronage!
Glad to hear you have them on your screen saver, as I also do at the moment.
You should join up, it is cheap and the certificate and badge etc arrives very quickly, I joined on the 29th and got my stuff two days ago.. from England!!

well, good question...
I have checked out the Flat Earth Society website, and while I admire their unrepentant and unrelenting attitude, I personally am on the side of the Vatican on this one! (Some would be amazed to hear me say Iwas on the Vatican side of anything...) Also, due to the fact that my father was an exploration geologist... well.. you know.. childhood indoctrination.
So I will leave the mental dor ajar, on joining the Flat Earhters myself, however, I can argue that you could be a member of both;
to wit:
As Flat Earhters are standing on ground, and staring out at the (necessarily limited) horizon, and see the world as flat, fair enough, but to stare upwards at the lcouds, then in no way connotes a heretical view to their/your standpoint, as clouds may, and do, fly above flat fields everywhere.
Where do clouds then go you ask? Well, they must then go into space, if the Earth is flat!
See!?? SOLVED!!!
So, you can be a member of both!
In fact, I want you to become a proselytizing advocate of The Cloud Appreciation Society on the Flat Earther's site!
Seems only fair, as clouds in no way suggest a globe shape to the Earth and as I pointed out above, could well be a further argument that heir theory is correct!

yes I love their mission statement too!
I should post a bit more on them, like what they expect of you at a meeting, sounds rather fun, in a slightly disturbing way!

yes the San Fran Bridge skyscape is groovy.. but after watching the doco, The Bridge last night, it is a little haunting.
That doco is about people who jump... the filmed the bridge for a year, and well, it is really sad, but does not feel exploitative becasue they tried to get police to save each one, and some were saved, but others...
Bryn posted on this awhile back, you should read his take on it, quite good; Bryn's blog: LINK Horrophile Archives

I'm going to pass on looking it up because I need positive vibes atm, but thanks. I guess any bridge is bound to be used in that capacity...

And there is a special cloud your new Society can adopt, worship and adore as your emblem, that being, the lenticular cloud, which is a long flattish bottomed cloud... hehe!

That's my new moniker for you, (I call Tracey "Trace De Face", so you are in illustrious company hehe!!).
I think your cloud is delightful and am so glad you intend joining this wonderful and eccentric Society!!
I intend, one day (ho hum!!) to try and organize a 'local chapter' of "The Cloud Appreciation Society" so we can meet up on occasion and lay back in deck chairs, mocktail or tea, or something stronger in hand, if that is the member's want, (I don't care if others drink and whatnot) and idly stare heavenwards, and gaze upon the slowly passing puffy white pageant!
Methinks Spring would be best for this I suppose!!
