DEBATE BATTLE: Who has it easier in life; a man or a woman?

February 4th 2008 05:24
Who has it easier in life, man or woman? Is it relevant that men are usually physically stronger than women? Are women smarter than men? If you had to choose between a man or a woman, who would you employ and why?

Are we all truly equal, just, 'some are more equal than others'?

Can we extrapolate from the saying, 'Blondes have more fun' that it is more fun being a woman, than being a man?

What attributes do men and women bring to the table of life, and is one set more important than the other?

Should all men learn to become 'metro-sexual' in order to identify with women more closely? Should all women get their own shed in the backyard, complete with power tools, so they can identify with men more?

Is sexual tension the underlying force driving the competition between the sexes, and does this dilute the possibility of a more powerful, important and longer lasting platonic relationship?

If so, should we stick to our own; male with male, female with female, and for those that want to relieve some sexual tension, they meet briefly in the middle, in neutral ground (like a hotel room), before returning to their own kind?

Would that make a more peaceful society, or would it make it much worse?

Well - to be historically correct - men does have it a little easier. HOWEVER, in the modern days, women have been smart enough to use their sexuality (well, some women) to advance in their lives....

Although, when it comes to career, life, social responsibilities and physical responsibilities (yes, we still have to bare the children) - men still has it easier.

Great quesion - great debate topic.

I know that I am glad I am a woman, but then, I've never known any other way. (Really, I haven't. )

Workwise - I try not to be biased, but generally you notice a woman about the place, little things are introduced to make everything easier and more efficient; multitasking comes as standard.

I don't think, in this day and age, that physical strength or prowess with powertools really matters. It's about inner strength, and the ability to problem solve, and adapt and think both creatively and practically, which I think can apply to either gender.

It's easy to generalise and say 'women are more nurturing and emotive and men are more dynamic and reasonable' but I really don't think that kind of biological essentialism has a realistic place in our society's future.

Either (or any) gender can have it hard or easy in life, be successful or not, in all different ways. I think it's determined by individual circimstances in the end, because there are too many factors that have a bearing on a person to base it all on sex.

I think in this day and age Women are not disadvantaged too much when compared to men. The range of advantage/disadvantage between people in general is much greater than the difference between the average man and women.

Harry has a good point there, employ? the best applicant, but I have a bias towards men for many things.

As I always say when men start having babies and rearing them as well as working, then, I'll believe in equality.

But I enjoy being a girl, but may well come back in the next life as a boy.

Just as well I like men and there are some women that I loathe, but then I loathe a lot of men too, especially in the work force, too many think they are oh, so smooth, if they really were they would treat women, especially low level workers a lot better.

Confusing response, just goes to show how confusing the issue is.

After all God made two sexes, having found Man, on his own, deficient, so I guess, at least for those who believe, we can blame the almighty. Hard one for agnostics and atheists.

Fancy seeing you here, fog.

Hi Amy,
thanks for your comment!
I agree, there has been vast advances, women are allowed to vote (thanks New Zealand!), and are in the workforce more now, however, in many areas even the female sexuality does not achieve the goal, becoming head of the organization.

One other thought, why are women's clothes still more costly than clothes for men?

Hi Michaelie!

I know that I am glad I am a woman, but then, I've never known any other way. (Really, I haven't. )

Ok...I'll believe you!! But your name ...MICHAEL..IE... is this a hint from your parents??? tee hee!

you notice a woman about the place, little things are introduced to make everything easier and more efficient; multitasking comes as standard.

True, I agree, but some men are multi-tasking too...I was...but then, maybe I am a half-man so to speak...and proud of it, so the 'mother f*&%#$s' who hate gays can ram it...and many do that too quietly!!

I don't think, in this day and age, that physical strength or prowess with powertools really matters

Well...SOME power tools are still a big factor in women's lives...and they are usually not found in the shed! But, I was attempting to use such as an analogy for finding the middle ground between the sexes.

It's easy to generalise and say 'women are more nurturing and emotive and men are more dynamic and reasonable' but I really don't think that kind of biological essentialism has a realistic place in our society's future.

You should send this into the offices of all State and Federal Ministers! What a power statement...go girl!!

Either (or any) gender can have it hard or easy in life, be successful or not, in all different ways. I think it's determined by individual circimstances in the end, because there are too many factors that have a bearing on a person to base it all on sex.

Absolutely true...yet a touch humourless my lovely, more the reponse I'd expect from a dour academician, rather than from the usually vivacious and piquant wit of your mental loins!

Hi Harry,
thanks for your comment too, and yes, there are many other greater and more overt differences in humanity, like the difference between the very rich and the very poor.

However, I still believe that women have it a lot tougher than men in many respects and, comparatively, are still debased by the voyeurism of the media which, for instance, features long lingering close ups of women parading down the catwalk, but does not do the same with male models; this sort of sexism is just another form of suppression by the male dominate culture.

Ahh...yes, two sexes, many versions of sexuality, including asexuality, but what of hermaphroditism?

Only the religious say man was made first...makes just as much sense to say a woman was first, does it not?

I'm glad you want to come back as a male, just to see what it is like on the other side, shows your adventurous side, however, does this not betray an underlying suspicion that women do have an inferior life to men, and the only way to know is by trying it?

However, these days Katyzzz, you can have a operation and find out in your present existance!

Maybe go half way, have best of both worlds!!

Fancy seeing you here, fog.

Finally, fancy yes, fancy me...

Hi DM!
Yes, the "women's curse"...Papuan New Guineans used to tie women to a tree for the time they were menstruating, poor things.

In early 'merry' olde England, all manner of things were tried, including the administration of a poison derived from white briony, a vine, which if enough was used, it did actually work, when the female died....

At other times, when it was popular to burn witches...I'll leave the rest to your imaginations!

Women have it a lot better in comparison, when one looks at history, but, are they truly equal in the way they are perceived and treated, in our present day, in so-called enlightened, emancipated western society?

However, there are many exceptions, Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, and soon, maybe Hilary Clinton!

I have already been a woman which I have loved being and in fact still am, but I realize the social injustice so NEXT time, I think being a man would be nice.

No desire to change in this life. I've had enough operations without inflicting yet another, of doubtful benefit, on this poor sliced up old body.

Now, must get back to my power tool... no not that, I am performing some home electrolysis on my legs - another joy of being a gal!

Still loving this post.

Are you kidding?

Does there have to be a "mine's bigger, better, shinier, louder, faster" debate about this.

Went to a concert last night where one of the songs performed by the female artist was titled "Do we still get to use the lifeboats first".

No prizes for guessing it was about women who want it all and then some . . . interesting that it was penned by a woman - and was an interesting social commentary.

Make the most of your lot in life whether your a man or a women.

I've often quizzed the nature of the cliche "that's so typically male/female" - what is the typical male/female?

If all men/women were alike (how many times do we hear that) - then what attracts us to our partners and spouses - or do we all eventually become "typical"?

When you find the answer to this one - let me know.

Fog,

I'm a woman who has had children, so of course I am going to say women...however it's all good, becuase as a result, we generally live longer.

Having said that; I remember hearing Robin Williams say that, '...Divorce for a man, was like having your testicles ripped out through your wallet.'

I suspect that wouldn't be easy either.

MNG!! WOW!!
Such ferocity from our usually mild mannered mister reasonably neutral person...ahh but we all need to let it out sometimes!

I agree, it is ludicrous to imagine that one is 'better' than the other, but does one have more advantages in life than the other? This is pertinent when we consider that the media and governments believe we all now live in a so-called enlightened, emancipated and egalitarian society, which seems to some degree, hypocritical.

Anyhoo...glad to see someone is wearing the pants in your place...or do you both fit in, one leg each?? tee hee!

Hi Lilla!
HEHE!! Yes, Williams has a way with word images does he not?

But what if, in the future, men are able to have babies themselves? I remember reading about some guy in England who wanted to, and a medical scientist saying that it would be possible, to implant a foetus in the abdominal cavity!

I shudder to think about it...the cravings stage...the whinging about back pain...pleeeeease!!

The mind boggles and I suggest we would have to have another debte battle on the whole subject again then, wouldn't we ... they'd cry that women have been using that ole childbirth is agony thing for far too long *lol* if only they knew... however, I don't think men have it easy either, I think it is more psychological. .. well except for the pregnant ones !?! *belly laughs*

I know I like being a woman and wouldn't want to be a guy!

I work in HR, so I'm well aware that men still get paid more than a woman for doing the same job - which is annoying.

I'd say that neither men nor women have it easy. But I'm going to say that since women are the ones who have to push out babies......women have it harder!

Hey K Dubyah!!

Yes, I imagine there are many nice things about being a woman; like men opening doors for you, and paying for dinner and the movies, and being saved first, when the ship is sinking.

All men have is their 'tool', which is a lot of fun in the beginning, but certainly loses its thrill after a few years time, especially when it has to be self-manually operated!!

Welcome linzi!!

I have to agree, even though I am a 'half' man, that men are usually hopeless with housework, especially when they have a female partner they can encourge to do the job for them!

Most men like to live in a neat and tidy clean home, but, most also do not want to do the work, instead, making themsleves out to be uttterly incompetent!

Sorry fellas, hope I didn't spoil your secret!
