ODDBALL WORDS: MORGANATIC!! tee hee!!
July 17th 2008 04:43
Yes, a new path for me to tread here, oddball words. Some are so antiquated they seem ludicrous to the point of being amusing. Others, just seem bizarre! Then there is the odd word that attracts one's attention, because of how it is spelt.
Take this word, for instance; MORGANATIC.
Of course, I seized upon this word because of my little Orble pal Morgan (well, she says she is VERY TALL, but I prefer keeping my mental image of her as petite, waif like and a total sniveller fag hag! tee hee!)
Morgan's family name is of interest, as is the family crest; the bells included on the crest indicate the family is noted for "the power to disburse evil", the colour gold indicates generosity, also indicated, by other colours and images; strength, loyalty, sincerity, peace, military honour and wise defence!
So, Morgan is probably best suited to go kill that moron Mugabe? tee hee!
Anyhoo, this word, MORGANATIC;
Definition:
adjective: Of or relating to a marriage between two people of different social ranks such that the spouse of lower rank and the children do not share the titles or possessions of the higher-ranking spouse.
ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin matrimonium ad morganaticam (marriage with a morning gift), implying that the gift given on the morning after the marriage was the only gift received by the wife. It was also known as a left-handed marriage because the groom held his bride's hand with his left (instead of right) hand. The word is of Germanic origin (morgen: morning, e.g. guten morgen: good morning). From a word for 'morning' to a word for a kind of marriage, that's an example of the idiosyncratic ways languages evolve.
Of course, in ye olden days, names were often derived from one's occupation, like Butcher, Baker, Shagger: oops! no just kidding!. Others by association to a noble's family line, and of course, the most common surname deriving from your place of birth and/or residence.
In England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales commoners did not have surnames originally, (same in Europe) and you were known as, for instance, Robin of Nottingham Forrest, or Charles of Buckingham etc. These names then evolved into variations, such as; John Nottingham, or John Forrest, Charles Buckingham, and then, there are the many "Fitz" families; Fitzgerald, Fitzsimmons etc, the "Fitz" denoting that you were the son of Patrick, Gerald, Simmons etc. Some say it also meant your forebear was a son (bastard) of a noble! The noble being known as Patrick, or Gerald etc. And then there is Johnson, originally formed from being the son of John, like son of Donald (MACDONALD) and son of Brien (O'BRIEN), etc.
So, there we are, a potted history and explanation, all for a bit of a larrff!!

I love words! I am a member of a wordsmith society.
However, your reference to song, and using morganatic for it instead of its original definition, umm, how did you get there? Maybe your are thinking of organ..atic..?? dunno
Anyhoo, as far as Morgan Bell goes, we can always say, "Well ring my chimes baiittch!"
Or, "Ask not for whom Morgan tolls..for she tolls for thee!"
Or, a song; "Morgan, she's mah ding-a-ling.."
Lastly, and not leastly, "Morgan rings true as a bell!!!"
hehehhehehehahahahahahah tee hee...wheeze..
cheers

don't be afraid, or honoured probably, as this word was sent to me today, and just by serendipity, it was your name, with suffix of course, and arrived at the moment I was lacking inspiration, so I chose to use it and do this silly post!!

Just check with your folke- who knows they may have quite a dowry set aside for you... an act of desperation some might say
It's still hard to say, for you commune with the lower classes everyday, and for where there is a twink with an ice addiction you shall be there.

frankly, on most days I waver 'tween silliness and melancholia, with a momentary pause in the middle, when I get on my spirited high horse for a socio/political rant, just don't record it all here...
I should stay more in the silly side I guess.. less angst.. sigh!

your family crest, showing not one but three bells, I will do some more searching on that number three, but anyway, it obviously indicates a strong connection with psychic power, "dispelling evil", and/or, curative abilities in your forebears.
So, had your lot been in Salem in the 1600s....
always suspected you were a witch!! hehe! A GOOD WHITE MAGIC one I mean...
