KILLER ROBOTS!!!
February 28th 2008 15:10
Killer Robot films are entertaining, but are they unrealistic? A Professor from Sheffield University has spoken out, to warn the world, about what is being developed in military laboratories around the planet.
A recent debate at Sheffield University has exposed a terrifying reality, robots are in operation in Iraq right now (4,000 USA bots of various types) and AUTONOMOUS KILLER BOTS are being developed, meaning, the robot decides who to kill and when, without outside influence or control!
Move over Arnie, Terminator is coming to the real world!
Development of these sci fi killer bots is well under way, and over the next ten to twenty years, we will see them being deployed in theatres of war all over the world.
This situation has led Professor Noel Sharkey, (from Sheffield University's Department of Computer Science), to base his keynote address to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), on the question of current robot development and to alert the world as to the dilemma we, as humans, may be facing in the not too distant future!

A robotics expert at the University of Sheffield will today (27 February 2008) issue stark warnings over the threat posed to humanity by new robot weapons being developed by powers worldwide.
In a keynote address to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Professor Noel Sharkey, from the University´s Department of Computer Science, will express his concerns that we are beginning to see the first steps towards an international robot arms race. He will warn that it may not be long before robots become a standard terrorist weapon to replace the suicide bomber.
Many nations are now involved in developing the technology for robot weapons, with the US Department of Defence (DoD) being the most significant player. According to the Unmanned Systems Roadmap 2007-2013 (published in December 2007), the US propose to spend an estimated $4 billion by 2010 on unmanned systems technology. The total spending is expected to rise above $24 billion.
Over 4,000 robots are currently deployed on the ground in Iraq and by October 2006 unmanned aircraft had flown 400,000 flight hours. Currently there is always a human in the loop to decide on the use of lethal force. However, this is set to change with the US giving priority to autonomous weapons - robots that will decide on where, when and who to kill.
Others are now embarking on robot weapons programmes in Europe and other allied countries such as Canada, South Korea, South Africa, Singapore and Israel. China, Russia and India are also embarking on the development of unmanned aerial combat vehicle. The US DoD report is unsure about the activity in China but admits that they have strong infrastructure capability for parallel developments in robot weapons.

It would seem, some pundits are far more worried about extremists getting their hands on robots, in order to use them for attacks, than they are about the problems that will be associated with killer bots being capable of deciding whether a human lives or dies!

Question is, will Professor Hirose's genius inventions be adopted to make killer bots more effective? He says he prefers organic shapes suited to purpose, instead of humanoid types, as they are less practical usually. However, even though Professor Hirose does not appear to be interested in making humanoid killer bots, a lot of other scientists are!
It is certainly a shock, when cruising the news sites, to see so many referring to large scale robotics development, for military use, and the fact that there is now a recognized global robots arms race!
Next time I go for a chocolate bar from a vending machine, think I'll say please and thankyou, lest later on, one of its pals decides to look me up!

yes indeed, and what if your local council gets armed bots to collect the rates...that old adage, 'stand or deliver' comes to mind!

that is an excellent poser!
It can obviously be argued neither, because life should not be purposely taken, no matter the situation.
However, a robot would have the ultimate cool headed logical mind, yet divorced of compassion, which is what makes us 'human' I guess, and just bearable too!

It's kind of a sad indictment on man-kind when you have to worry about how scientific discoveries are going to eventually be used as tools of war!

oooooo scary! After hearing they were making robot men/women for lonely singles - now this??? eh, makes the future seem a little.... unsettling to say the least.
Thanks for taking the time to research such an interesting piece. I`ll be playing nice with my lego from now on

Yes, we must start thinking about our mechanical friend's feelings!
Mind you, I could do with a few bots about my place, and in fact I have written a script about certain male pleasure bots, (about 5 or 6 years ago now), and it maybe worth digging it up!
As for the military, they have always been in the shadows waiting to adapt scientific and medical developments and, indeed, some if their stuff has made it into our homes and offices, for a more innocuous purpose of course!

you are right, the future does look really scary, for when one considers the stupid mistakes humans make, especially in relation to military events, the idea that robots will be involved AND calling the shots, just leaves me cold!!
cheers
and lets start saving up, so we can get a front door guard bot for our own homes...then again...maybe not...how could we ever trust it???

yes indeed, it is really scary, for now we are about to enter a time when life becomes far more bizarre, and scarier, than the movies!
