Pesky Prepositions!
October 27th 2007 15:33
Once prepositions turn carnivore,
they prowl as predators,
across the page;
disjointing thought streams,
when teeming together,
devouring desire to create.
Their mass becomes a morass,
their numbers diluting,
pungent cogent concepts,
derailing trains of thought,
like blocks of wood would,
when lain upon the track.

A preposition, (you put proposition..which is another proposal altogether..tee hee!!),
is a word that governs the noun or pronoun and usually preceeds the noun or pronoun and it tells you where somebody or something is, in relation to something else, in the same sentence, but, sometimes it may appear at the end of a sentence, eg "This is something I will not put up with."...."with" being a preposition.
However, usually it is preceeding the noun or pronoun, eg, "I am with Hercules." So again "with" is being the preposition. Prepositions are joining words, so it joins "I am" to "Hercules" showing the relationship "I" has with "Hercules", that being, they are together.
English...I am VERY GLAD I was born into it, and not having to learn it from another language, because it has so many rules and some contradictory, appalling nonsensical spelling rules with no inflections for easy pronunciation and so is a right pain in the bum to learn!!
cheers and the little I know about english would be far outweighed by what you know about pooters and other geeky stuff, and so I am in awe of geeks!!

thanks for the compliment...I was trying to begin editing a story I recently began writing, only seven pages so far, and just got bogged down, smothered, with silly little words, conjunctions playing a big role too, of course!
Brevity is the soul of wit!
So I must heed this advice and strip out the unnecessary and produce a lean and pithy work....feel exhausted thinking about it now...want to go to bed...and it's 3.10pm...
cheers

I was going to say you took the words right out of my mouth, but that would have been wrong. I could never have put it so beautifully. But I have felt like this before - I guess using the wrong prepositions is what usually makes people realize that I am not an English native speaker.

nice to 'meet ya', so to speak! hehe!
Indeedy, english is very descriptive, borrowing from many languages, but that compounds the problem of understanding it. And besides pesky prepositions, there are the mind clotting consonants!
Consonants can be a HUGE bugbear for me as, when I get in a particular mood, they seem to proliferate to an annoying extent, mainly because I have not thought about what I wish to say.
Now that we have 'met', I'll check out your site too!
