QUOTE ME NO QUOTES!

June 4th 2009 13:25
George Bernard Shaw

This is the first of many posts on the subject of great quotes in history. It spans from the ancient Greeks and Romans, to this very day. Of course, some will be full of import and cause one to reflect as the knell of familiarity chimes deep within our dusty brain corridors, others will merely entertain, for we are but briefly visiting, in this present incarnation, so there is no time to lose in having a good old laugh, and a ponder, upon the bon mots of the wise, the humorous and the ludicrous. Enjoy! And, if you have any pet quotes, feel free to add them to the list.

From the mind of the wonderful George Bernard Shaw (playwright, Noble Prize winner and humourist);

You see things as they are and ask, "Why?" I dream things as they never were and ask, "Why not?"
Back to Methuselah (1921)

Now I know where JFK got the inspiration for that amazing speech from!!

You'll never have a quiet world till you knock the patriotism out of the human race.
O'Flaherty V.C. (1919)

Something we still have not learned!

We have no more right to consume happiness without producing it than to consume wealth without producing it.
Candida, Act I (1898)

Interesting concept...

There is only one religion, though there are a hundred versions of it.

Plays Pleasant and Unpleasant, Vol. II, preface (1898)

I certainly second the motion to that one!

If only the religious world could see itself through 'God's eyes', they would all see themselves with the same patchwork skin. (mountain fog 4-6-09)

Government is like a big baby, an alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.
Ronald Reagan

Ronnie had quite a sense of humour...

Some quotes are really good aren't they. And I didn't know Ronald Reagan had such a sense of humour. I'll look forward to your series.

Hi Janet,

tanx and yes, some people just have the knack of encapsulating a point in history, and/or the foilbles of the human condition.

Hi Foggly

This topic sounds great. It'll be a good one for us to read and good fun and interesting for you to research.

I don't think my brain is working yet as I thought you meant quotes about our pets, ie pooches: And, if you have any pet quotes, feel free to add them to the list.

Silly moi!

And Aristotle Onassis stole this famous quote from GBS: "The only rule is that there are no rules." It was paraphrased slightly.

Really like this series fog.

Hi Bill,

HAH!! Onassis too eh?

That does not surprise me as much as Kennedy, however, maybe his speech writer was at fault there, or did he write his own speeches?

cheers and tanx

Oh to be quotable!

Would help if I didn't talk such total nonsense all the time, I guess.

Fun post, Fog, liked that last one! (That sentence wasn't nonsense by the way - you can quote me on that).

Hi Foggly

Stella has a way with words like you! I'll be back if Fergal says anything as remotely intelligent!

Hi Trace de Face,

yes, Stella is sagacious and erudite, with an impishly caustic wit at times; a taxing rod for my comparatively feeble intellect, all too often dumbfounded by her scintillating acumen.

cheers
