RAPTURE about the F22 RAPTOR!!
February 24th 2008 10:07
AT LAST!! Someone with half a brain in charge of procurement for our defence forces! Defence Minister Fitzgibbon is showing he is no organ grinder's monkey, by asking the USA for the F22 Raptor.
Visiting US Defence Secretary Robert Gates allegedly told our own Defence Minister Fitzgibbon, at the AUSMIN meeting in Canberra, that;
(Article quote) '..the US Administration had in principle no objection to foreign sales of F22 but the sale had to be approved by congress.' (The Sunday Telegraph: Feb. 24 2008, Pg. 11)
Well hoo...blooody..ray....about time...but of course, the catch is, will the US Congress allow its STEADFAST ALLY and BUDDY (remember that George?) to get its mitts on the F22 Raptor?
While in the mood for tossing barbs at buddies, Aussies were not allowed the TOMCAT!
The USA let Japan get the TOMCAT, which was banned from foreign sales, and not us! It seems a trifle galling that an ex-enemy won the right to that advanced jet, but not the USA’s ally of nearly 100 years in world conflict….us…the good ole Aussies!!...sniff sniff…
Could it be, the US does not want to upset our northerly neighbours?
Could it be, the US doesn’t want to accelerate the impending arms race in our region?
Could it be, that the US wants to cosset its relationship with our northerly neighbours because of commercial/mining interests and so allow them to have air superiority over us Aussies?
Is this also a reason why the atrocious human rights abuses of the West Papuans have gone ignored by our allies (and ignored by us too of course, for other reasons)?
As I have stated here before, thanks to the moronic purchasing decisions of the previous Federal Government Administration, ‘brainiac’ Brendon Nelson in particular, we are stuck with buying jets the US forces themselves refused to buy off the manufacturer years ago, because the Russians would have shot them out of the sky before their jets even knew they were there.
These Russian jets, among them the Sukhoi Mk 30, will indeed blow the jets Nelson ordered apart, and guess who is buying those Sukhoi jets; Indonesia, Malaysia and China....
Ok, so, we need not worry about China, after all, it has millions of troops, and intercontinental ballistic (and nuclear) missiles, so if it gets nasty with us Aussies, kiss your beach towel, zinc cream and *thongs goodbye!
*(America and Europe please take note; 'thongs' downunder are Aussie rubber sandals, not bum crack revealing undies...well…usually !)
As for Malaysia, well, we have an air base there anyway and we are a lot friendlier with each other than they let on.
Now, who does that leave…umm…?
Reminds me, saw an episode of some aging journo’s tour of Indonesia recently, and he played up how friendly Indonesians are towards us…some even scared of us!
Well the average punter in the street may be ok with us. So what? They are not in charge! Another exception would be that Bali bomber supporter slime bag ‘I’m not a terrorist’ Aussie and USA hating Islamic leader…ALI CHICKEN SHIT PRICK….(name deleted)…
So yes, we need the MOST advanced jets, ones that can flog the Russian Sukhois, from our American buddies…BEST BUDDIES….BEST-EST BUDDY CHAPS AND BETTER THAN BRITAIN BUDDIES…are y’all listening over there???
And so we need to drop $400 odd million, to cancel the crap jets order, to get the groovy ones….so what?
It is a small price to pay to ensure air superiority in our region. Maybe then our neighbours will start respecting our opinion again and begin treating our citizens in their country with a little more dignity???
And in closing, at the end of the day, no matter what we do, an arms race is WELL UNDER WAY in our region, slowly but surely, little by little, and if we sit back and pussy foot around, we will find ourselves way behind the eight ball.

We have only a strategic interest as far as the US concerned - no oil, no economic sway - just a largely deserted landing base in the south pacific which they give lip service to every now and then.
Sure - we give our best young men and women to the cause in Iraq, Afghanistan and points north - but is this enough . . . it would appear not.
All we ask (or should we be starting to tell) our US 'partners' is that we are tired of being treated to MacDonalds at the diplomtic dining table.
It's time we started to let our ally know that there are alot of dinner guests out there and perhaps (just perhaps) they'll need to knock on our front door rather than simply expecting to be allowed in, in future.
What a croc.
Good on Fitzgibbon - finally (and hopefully) a 'ballsy' defence minister.

great to hear from you.
I agree, if our Def. Min. told The States we were looking elsewhere for purchase, such as Russia, Sweden, Germany, even Britain, I think they would start listening to our needs and expectations!
I have been checking out military gossip sites, and it seems the F35s will be good for us, the Super Hornet will be ok as a stand in, with adjustments, all because none of them see us going to war with a northern neighbour, anytime soon.
maybe so, however, it is New Guinea that we have to worry about, and all those potential oil fields off Timor, Taiwan and PNG probably, besides the gold, copper etc within PNG!!
cheers and lets mediatate on getting 'Alien' help...some of their stuff would be really groovy!! hehe!

thanks for the comment and wow! I would not have guessed you were from a military family!
I too have heard stories...like parts left in the weather and rusting, and instead of being reported and replaced, some of these parts were installed as is, in a brand new....(hmmm...not sure if I am game enough to say this here, as it is extremely contentious and would cause an uproar...anyway, whatever it was, the rusted parts led to system failure on a particularly expensive military object...nuff said!)

They look nice but does it come in any other colours?
Honestly I was wondering why Australia was trying to replace the F111 with something that could not do the job.
Usually bad defense purchases stem from personal interest.
Kickbacks? What kickbacks? Enjoy that meal and junket ( I mean vendor paid fact finding tour )
If the opposition says this we will show them who is boss and pick the other one. That is sure to make them look like fools. Ha ha ha...
Typical Howard government attitude to defense spending. Buy some thing cheaper that does not work just like out fleet of sea helicopters that were all grounded. So much for making the nation safer.

indeed! They are a mixture of self serving sociopathic greedy swindlers and laughable incompetance!
Add to the choppers the noisey subs with the unintegrated and outmoded attack system, the jamming Stern rifles, the feet wrecking boots and back breaking backpacks...the list is too long to finish here...
However, some military buffs I have recently been exchanging views with, suggest, that we are not going to be as badly off as it first seems. They say our near and 'dear' neighbours have no wish to cause us problems.
I do not have their unswerving faith.
At present, a neighbour of ours is slowly building up its hardware, which I will reveal in another post.
What it really means to us I am not sure, but we need to be able to support and protect our allies in this part of the pond...
cheers
