ANTI-TERRIBLE LAWS

November 18th 2008 05:36
An enigmatic title, but no, I am not referring to dreadful blogs being classed as 'terrible', tee hee! This is a serious matter, and you have a chance to do something constructive about demanding the repeal of the draconian, totalitarian style laws introduced by Howard and his cronies.

Help make Prime Minister Rudd sit up and take notice, let him know we expect him to remove these outrages against our rights and all that we hold dear about a democracy, (even though technically the concept is an illusion to some degree).

The fact that the Rudd Government has been in a year now, and these laws remain as part of Australian law, speaks volumes about Rudd and his government.

The Opposition are now calling for a reform of these laws! Now who would have believed that would happen, considering they were the ones who introduced them!

help fight unjust and totalitarian like laws!

The following "GETUP" campaign is worthy or our support.

In case none of you remember, our own (ex)Federal Attorney General Philip Ruddock, when asked about "water boarding" (a torture designed to make you feel like you are drowning: see LINK: link IMAGES WATERBOARDING TORTURE) was not torture in his opinion, nor did he think sleep deprivation was torture, and by these inferences, one concludes Australia would not complain to America about its use of torture, nor, it would seem, ban its use in Australia.

We voted the Liberal Party sicko psychopaths out of office, but, what has the Rudd Government done to amend these laws?

Not anywhere near enough it would seem.

Do you know what they can do to you under these laws?

The following will give you some idea;

Potential for preventive detention: short term detention for named individuals: without evidence; and without criminal involvement; the detainee may be interrogated by Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO); disclosing that an individual has been so detained or interrogated is, in almost all circumstances, a crime.

Control orders: Potential for almost unlimited restrictions on named individuals: freedom of movement; freedom of association (including one's lawyer); banning the performing of named actions and owning named items, including actions and things necessary to earn a living; unlimited requirements to be, or not to be, at specified places at any or all times of the day and week; wear a tracking device; and including encouragement to submit to re-education. These restrictions are referred to as "control orders", and may be granted for a period of one year before review.

Significant restrictions on the right of any citizen to express certain opinions: including criticism, or "urging disaffection", of the sovereign, the constitution, the government, the law, or 'different groups'; exemptions may exist where the target of criticism is agreed to be 'in error'; exemptions appear to exist where the claim is that a feature of a group of people is in some way offensive to the mainstream of society; onus of proof of goodwill is on the defendant - the presumption is not of innocence.

Help me send a message to PM Rudd, that Australia does not condone the use of torture and wants these outrageous and anti-citizen rights laws removed.

We already had enough laws (prior to Howard) to deal with any issue that may arise, except all but one issue, that being State sponsored terrorism which, sad to say, has become increasingly popular in the Western world the last twenty years or so.

Time to take stand, for your sake, and for the future.

Sedition, preventative detention, control orders, evidence obtained by torture, extraordinary rendition - as the world moves on from the Bush-Howard era of draconian anti-terror laws, Australia can't be left behind.

Governments have a responsibility to keep the community safe. But our law books contain 44 extraordinarily harsh laws that erode our human rights, offend the rule of law, and grant our authorities immense power with little scrutiny.

The best way to protect the community is to make sure our authorities operate under clear, transparent and just guidelines that ensure the best outcomes are gained by upholding legal principles. Sign our petition calling for an independent review and watchdog to make sure our anti-terror laws protect us and our rights:

The laws were rushed into place.
Yet I do not see them being rushed out by Kevin 747.
Some have a sunset clause.

Indeed,
I think Howard tried pushing them through opn Melbourne Cup Day, then had Labor agree to them, with some consessions, as you suggest.

Only the Democrats and the Greens opposed them outright.

I think Kevin 747 is rather liking the Fuhrer bunker mentality the laws bring...

I totally agree, but I believe the Rudd government is even worse than the Howard one... with his socialist christian beliefs I think we really need to watch out for this one...

Thank you for reminding me about Get Up. I always thought the campaign they did to bring David Hicks home was a great one.

These laws are terrible and I have happily signed the petition. Thanks for making it so easy.

Hi Rachel H,

I know where you are coming from, regarding wariness of Rudd and hidden agendas, however, I don't think he is a notch on Howard, as far as bringing Australia into international ill repute.

Thanks to Howard joining us up to the phony bullshit war in Iraq etc, we now have a target on our foreheads when we travel in the Middle East.

As for Rudd, we indeed need to keep a close watch and demand our rights.

When I wrote to the new government, asking aobut a Bill of Rights, after months of delay, the response I got was a brush off, saying we couldn;t have one, becuase of the problems America has with its Bill of Rights, for instance, the right to bear arms!!

What crap! Aussies can hardly own a ruddy gun to start with! So, yes we need to keep making these bastards aware we are not going to be blindly led by the nose.

Hi Cheryl J,

that is completely my pleasure, and thank you for caring enough to do something about it.

Too many people these days whinge about things, then do nothing at all to help effect change.

tanx!

cheers
