COLOURED ICE BERGS WITH STRIPES PHOTOS!!!

May 21st 2008 05:42
Find following four amazing photos of ice bergs, that have extraordinary stripes and discolourations within them. Some look like marble, one looks like it is a huge hard boiled lolly (candy) swirled with different colours. They are beautiful and incredible.

DAMMIT!! keep fingers crossed I can use the photos again!

APOLOGIES TO ALL!!!!!

These bizarre berg photos had been sent to me unattributed, however, I have today established they are copyrighted, and I am presently trying to contact copyright owners and/or agents to see if they will allow me to show them here.

But, the good news is, they are in fact ALL REAL!!

EVEN THE BIZARRE LOLLY STRIPED ONE IS REAL!!!

I have tracked down numerous news articles and sites/photographers, who shot the photos and/or interviewed the photographers, their veracity has been tested, and yes, they are all real ice bergs.

Sorry to those who missed seeing them!

But, the world being what it is today, one has to get permission, for every bastard on the block wants to graft a buck out of you!

Gone are those early halcyon days of free information on the net, the early times of a true global free community, slowly being suppressed by greed for the dollar!

TO ATONE FOR MY MISTAKE: PLEASE FOLLOW THIS LINK AND YOU WILL SEE MORE REALLY BIZARRE AND BEAUTIFUL ICE BERGS (official Australian Antarctica Mission Site)

Trust me, you will not be disappointed checking out this gallery of ice berg photos!!

HEY!! IS THAT YOU IN THAT BOAT WITH THE ROLLER FULL OF PAINT???

Might have known you would be playing practical jokes Raven!!

So this happens up in ice block country too? All these photos are of Antarctic ice...of course it does stand to reason the same would happen up there.

I've seen some amazing photos of glaciers, that ancient dark blue ice, but never in bergs.

So have you seen bergs like these? How about the lolly like one!!

By the looks of Raven's comment, they are probably real. I know I have seen docos showing the deep blue ice veins in glaciers, but never seen the bergs!

Yep, you have to use special water colors to paint them fog.

We have some local ice cave under our glaciers that are stunning. Glaciers calve off 'bergs constantly, way cool, and set off mini Tsunami's in the process.

So Raven,

the bergs set set off mini tsunamis when they hit the ocean eh?

So do you boogie board those bad boys or what?

And why don't you get some photos of that cave under the glacier? Does the light shine through the ice roof of it?

First the crop circles - now this!

Seriously never seen anything like it before.

I have my suspicions - but sincerely hope I'm wrong.

I would be nice to think nature delivers something new for all us to marvel.

Aw, don't be shamed... it's better to use a more unusual word with a slight error in spelling than stick to the tried and true ones anyday!

Hi MNG,

nice to see you again.

I concur, I had not seen anything like it before, so I did some checking.

The first port of call, turned out to be a site for weird photos, so my suspicions were raised. Then, I found the same photos on another site dedicated to things Antarctic, which was intriguing, then I checked an actual Antarctica Exploration site, with blogs written by scientists in the Antarctic, and saw a photo of a sheet of ice that was made pink by infusion of red algae, green and blue algae also affect the colours, and there was s suggestion that the algae in the sea water at times causes a berg to be topped with colour, and the rare "jade" berg, of which there was a photo.

they do mention brwon or "chocolate" bergs, caused by glacial moraine, but no mention of stripes.

So, this leaves me questioning the "lolly" striped one, and maybe the curtain striped one. The other two look very plausible.

Hi Epiphanie,

hehe, indeed, however, this was not an unusual word in my vocbulary usage, and so I am a victim maybe of too much spell check in recent times, I use it for typo mistakes usually, as I have a reasonable grasp on my language, but there is always room for improvement!!

Isn't it Amy!!

I am trying to find out if the last one is actually real and not touched up. I have established that blue striped bergs do exist, and colour does get into bergs, but yet to find out about the multi-colured one.

Hi SL,

yes indeed, they are incredible.

The blue ones, I have fairly well established, do occur naturally, and Antarctic sites write about algae and moss, dirt etc causing discolourations in the glacial sheet, which ends up as bergs dropping into the sea.

But the best photo they had, that I have found so far, was of a "jade" berg, all green, and a clear ice one, see through, which is amazing too.

I am trying to get in contact with the site, so I can post some of them, but their email isn't working at the moment.

Wow, awesome Fog...

I am with MNG on my suspicions of deep-ice breaking free from the global melt - suspicions... will research it a little further ... did you find anything to support such "theory?"

Otherwise, absolutely beautiful ... nature never ceases to amaze me with her marvelous diversity ...

thanks for sharing them.

Lilla ...

Comment by Mountain Fog

May 23rd 2008 12:50
Hi Lilla,

yes I have found photos on Antarctic researcher sites, ones written while the scientists are living in Antarctica, and there are photos of "jade" coloured bergs, bergs with blue stripes, and even pink sheets, while still on land, and other colours are indeed described, but getting photos of them is a rare event, obviously because they are working all the time while there, so it is lucky chance to see the rare coloured ones.

As I have stated before, the only one that worries me is the mutli-coloured "lolly" one, which could be manipulation, but, some explorers do describe colours being seen on bergs, more as a topping, when the berg rolls, showing its bottom, you see the discolouration area that was in contact with the ground when it was in the glacier.

Still, even if the lolly one is a digital manipulation, the blue ones are amazing enough!

Hi Trace de Face,

yeah, it amazes me still! The new onse, via the LINK, are they not beautiful? What about that jade coloured one? And as for the multi-striped lolly coloured one I had posted here, that one I could have sworn was done in photo shop!

Now all I have to do is get permission to put them back on here again!

I will post a few shots I can access in the meantime.

cheers
