The Golden Orb Awards!!!!

November 13th 2007 05:01
Who thinks it would be a great idea if we started our own award ceremony? I suggest calling it The Golden Orb Awards! All Orblers, members and visitors, could vote, maybe Orble could give a "virtual award", creating a gold stamp or "Orb" which is placed on the avatar for the blog?

What do you think? Like it? Hate it?

Below are some suggestions for categories; do you have some more categories that could be included?

Catagories:

Best Horror Review!
Best Horror Reviewer!

Best TV Review!
Best TV Reviewer!
Best FIlm Review (Drama)!
Best FIlm Reviewer (Drama)!
Best FIlm Review (Comedy)!
Best FIlm Reviewer (Comedy)!
Best Sports Review!
Best Sports Reviewer! (maybe subcategories soccer, AFL, NRL etc)
Best Book review!
Best Book reviewer!
Best short stories!
Best Poetry!
Most consistently humorous!
Best Display!
Best Links!
Most Promising Newcomer!
Most Votes!
Most Traffic!
Most Revenue!
(obviously Orble management would love that one best!)

And awards for other types of blog..any ideas?

What about, "Most Welcoming to Newcomers Award?

Maybe on the 30th of December we (Orble) announces the winners?

Maybe Orble management could give some of the awards themselves too?

Whaddyareckon Jon??? Chas???

The Golden Orb Awards!!!!

cheers

fog

P.S.

Another idea:
Orble asks for everyone to nominate under the selected categories, on an interactive voting form we can all access on Orble, which restricts one vote by a single Orbler for each category...like the "vote machines" some of the 'smarty pants' Orblers have on their blogs!

I think their are too many categories that could be lumped up under one (i.e. best review) especially since we don't have that many people reviewing heaps of stuff. So maybe if it's a bit more generel in the sense 'best movie blog', 'best book blog', 'best new blog', 'best new blogger' and so on and so forth.

I think it would be great too btw.

There might need to be more categories for the enviro, health, beauty, travel, fashion, news, love/relationships, politics people?

Fabulous idea Fog! Sounds like fun.

Haha, cheers Ahmed.

I did this last year, and gave out a few awarted. IU was going to release a post on it this year, at the start of December.

You're welcome to your own awards as well though fog.

I'll probably be jumping into the award giving bandwagon too sometime later this year

Comment by Mountain Fog

November 13th 2007 10:09
Thanks for the comments and support folks!

Ahmed says Brenton already came up with this idea; I didn't know, I never saw his post about it. Frankly, I am not seeking kudos here anyway, merely thought it was a good idea, and I have a lot of others that go with it, which I have told Jon about.

Anyway, as for categories, yes, of course it can be reduced and other areas represented, I too think we could end up with so many categories we would all get an award! Maybe that is good too, but, it would take away form the overall concept of being 'special' for something.

Anyhoo...if everyone asks Jon or Chas via email or posting to get the awards up and running, it is all for the general good.

cheers everybody

It would obviously be best to have Jon/Charles do the awards as it would add some officiality to it.

Comment by Mountain Fog

November 13th 2007 10:21
To Ahmed and Brenton;

No worries mates!

I was not actually intending that The Golden Orb Awards were mine to award by the way!!!

I was suggesting that Orble itself awards them, both as a way of encouraging new 'talent', rewarding consistency, and whatever else they deem fit, including having Orblers vote on various categories.

This is why I added the following to my post above;

Orble asks for everyone to nominate under the selected categories, on an interactive voting form we can all access on Orble, which restricts one vote by a single Orbler for each category...like the "vote machines" some of the 'smarty pants' Orblers have on their blogs!

I also believe it could be expanded beyond Orble, but I will leave that up to the Orble people, I merely sent in the suggestion.

cheers y'all

Yes Ahmed,
as I had already stated beforehand, however, it would probably be prudent for them to have some outside input, to eliminate cronyism, in the decision making, if possible. And to assist with assessing artistic merit.

And of course, the Orblers must be allowed to vote for their own favorites too, which is only being democratic!

You must agree with that surely?

I think it's a great idea as well. So we should have the awards monthly perhaps in the first week of a new month for the previous one?

Categories I would suggest (which are pretty much the same as Fog's):

Best Post Section

Best Post Overall
Film
Sports
Politics
News
Celebrity
Comedy
Poetry
Other

Other awards
Best New Blog
Best New Blog Theme
Most Votes
Blog with the most traffic
Writer with the most traffic
Best Comment

I'll have a think about the logistics of voting. We probably want voting to be anonymous?

Jon.

At the very least - each awardee should be recognised via an saluatory icon on either their home page or next to their Orble listing.

Great concept.

I love the idea. I think it's brilliant!

Comment by Mountain Fog

November 14th 2007 02:27
Hi Jon,

thanks for supporting the idea.

As MNG has suggested, (and I have already covered this in my email yesterday to Chas and you too I think Jon?..can't remember..) anyway, The Golden Orb Award should be designed and, look very golden...shiny too...hehe..and orb-like, and rather fabulous looking!!!

I see it as an orb (representing the world, showing map of OZ out front) on a pedestal, maybe of people's arms, and the orb held up by three different coloured hands, to suggest the international membership and multi-culturalism of Orble; colours...black, white and yellow I guess...well those colours crudely cover our main groups.

However, maybe you could reconsider my suggestion that there are two types of awards, one annually, (Golden Orb), so it covers a whole year of work from varying categories, and one monthly, which I suggested looks more like a rosette with ribbon, "The Orblette" and they attach to the header of the winner, and/or their name in the list of bloggers, and/or a separate list on the home page for the monthly winners.

These awards then pass into a category on their blog, titled "Awards", and the slate is clean for the next month's awards presentation, or in the case of the Golden Orb, put into their archive on the eve of the annual award.

Now I know I am getting carried away here...sorry....I am a bit verbose...err...whatever...but please baer with me...

I think it would be really groovy if we had a site that appears every year as the award ceremony site...all jazzed up like the Oscars, red carpet and whatnot, and the celebrity writers could have little gossipy things to say, (amusing things to say not nasty!) and it is here that the awards are initally announced. Eventually, in time, this could be a great revenue collection site for Orble, from the cross promotion/advertising on it, as it would get a big traffic flow...maybe in ten years...hehe!

Anyway, can't wait to see the designs!! And so Jon, you like the name, Golden Orb Awards???(fog says in cringingly pathetic voice!)

cheers to all and thanks everyone for the input, and please keep adding ideas and send them to Jon and/or Chas, or put them here if you like.

good idea.

what about best new & current affairs?

Comment by Mountain Fog

November 14th 2007 03:25
Thanks Jon,

fantastic!

And the monthly Awards,

"The Orblette" Encouragement Award

for new Orblers, and for those existing Orblers who have done good work but are not being recognized and/or getting on the home page lists (20 up votes) thereby increasing their exposure? This would only help serve increase in traffic hopefully, as well as encourage people to keep plugging away.

The Orblette is the award I see as purely a virtual award, and looks like those old fashioned rosettes with a ribbon we see, in old English movies. Maybe the centre of the rosette could be a small golden orb and the outside area the different coloured hands, as I designed for the annual Golden Orb Award

And this rosette symbol "The Orblette" is put on the winner's blog for that month, then goes into the award archive.

This means a HALL of FAME site could be created too, where all the award winners, (and names of the next top three nominees for each category) could be viewed by visitors, and a listing of the awarded blogs and articles, all linked.

Once awarded, each recipient can also make an Awards Category on their site to store it once the month is up, with a link included by management back to management's controlled Hall of Fame site.

The Award symbols should be created so they cannot be copied, so only management has control over them. And, a warning that any racist or other hate attack will not recieve nomination inclusion.

Also, the monthly awarded "Orblette" should only be awarded by management, is probably best, less fuss for everyone, and I think it would be asking too much of bloggers, who would lose interest quickly if they voted every month.

The Annual Golden Orb Award is awarded by management in some categories and blogger votes in others, like "Most Traffic" awarded by management, then we bloggers vote for "Best Reviewer" or whatever.

Yes Damo,

very good idea!

As was Michaelie's, about the lifestyle etc topics, all this will be up to management to decide which way to go is best, but, just keep emailing them to suggest your idea and maybe bring the topic up on your site, (other Orblers should do this too), so that it gets greater exposure.

And no, I don't mean link back to me!...just in case someone out there thinks this is my sneaky self promotion exercise..hehe...DAMN!! I shouldda used that angle!! Not any good at being sneaky though.

What I mean is, I don't get the coverage/exposure others do on Orble, (my posts don't make the home page initially) so it just makes more sense an Orbler with greater reach mentions it on their own blog.

However, I am worried that USA members, and others overseas, may feel they are not included, so I hope you can help let them know it is for everyone, not just Aussies. (umm..I hope that is right!! Check with Jon)

cheers

I think MNG's idea is best - the post or site that wins an award gets a little pic attached to their blog.

There could be a special blog listing all the winners... it'd be like a 'Best of Orble' page...

Comment by Mountain Fog

November 15th 2007 14:05
Hi Joshz,
it is up to orble management how it is run as I have asked that they run it all, but, I have suggested to them that; some areas Orble management would pick the winner of, such as "most traffic", and other categories we Orblers would get a vote on, one vote each per category, per person.

Cibby, I had already covered with management the virtual award appearing on a special site and on the winner's blog, in general they think my ideas are good, but I do not know how much or what they will use, I have not put all the detail here, just enough to get the idea flowing. I have also suggested that a special area on the Orble home page lists the Orblette monthly winners, and a separate site, for the Golden Orb.

I was hoping it would be like the Academy awards night, and have a red carpet and stuff...maybe animated..and celebrity reporters from Orble interviewing and gossip pieces, I think we are not really heading that way yet! But, you never know!

If there was an award for long windedness, I know I'd, at the least, get nominated!! hehe!

P.S. Stella is recovering slowly, she goes on tummy tablets now, which is going to be interesting trying to force one down her little throat, with that big obstinate head attached to it!!

Special "post-humous" award to his Wordophilia blog - for the only blog that had to be "killed off" (ie Blog Cemetery) for socio-political reasons (ie so-called obnoxious behaviour) ... And David should get award for Biggest Orble Shit-Stirrer .... But knowing David, he'll do a Marlon Brando and not turn up to the awards, instead sending a fake Orble Angel in his place to recieve his award ... .LOL

Oh Yes, your previous champers comment made me think, the Golden Orbs should become an actual event in the future!

Hi Morgan,
thanks for leaving a comment!

Well, as for the "Golden Orble Awards", I have no idea what is happening.

Last I was told, I think by Jon (Orble online management), that he was working on organizing it, but not heard anything about it since November last year, by the date of my last post here.

Ask Jon, or Charles, (Orble management), maybe they can tell you what is going on and why the delay. Let me know what you find out, tanx!
