VALE Amy Winehouse
July 23rd 2011 17:10
News has just flashed across the TV, Amy Winehouse is dead. She has just been found in her North London flat. As yet, the cause of her death is unknown.
This is terribly sad news, Winehouse was a magnificent talent whose all too short career was interrupted and damaged by substance abuse. Now, she is gone.
Some of my all time most loved performers died all too early; Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jimmy Morrison were all lost within a couple of years of each other, I remember that time, and began to ownder whether I would love another performer, as the loss was felt deeply.
Rock and Roll, acting and even the sports world has lost many greats over the years to drugs and alcohol.
I lost my career, well several careers, to drugs and alcohol.
So I know, from personal experience, how devastating it can be to the soul, body and mind.
It matters not what or how much you take or drink, what matters is how much it affects you, those you love, and how it affects your hopes and desires, your career opportunities.
I stayed clean and sober through the assistance and fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
I turn 18 years clean and sober this August 6th, it has been a hard journey at times, but I am alive, and I am more helpful to my family than I ever was before. I also started writing, instead of just talking about writing, and directing for stage. I have created and staged, directed and wrote the libretto, of a new Australian opera, and several other musical works, among them an Oratorio.
None of that would have been possible if I had not become clean and sober.
If you think you might need to talk to someone, about alcohol use or drug use, then all you have to do is look up the phone directory, or call an operator, and ask for AA or NA.
You will receive a sympathetic and compassionate ear, our fellowship is about inclusion, not judgement.
Peace to Amy Winehouse.
Listen to one of her songs today, and send her your love.
