What did the Tooth Fairy leave you?
December 3rd 2007 15:12
Did you get visited by the Tooth Fairy? What did she, or he, leave you? My biggest reward was a florin, 20 cents. Did you ever believe, or did you always know it was mum or dad?
Well...just wondering...as I might have something for him/her in the next 12 hours, my rear right molar...dammit...hurting like blazes!!
Anyway, what is it about the tooth fairy?
Where and when did that happen?
Did you get visits?
Did you leave your newly removed tooth under your pillow?
Or were you a 'in the glass of water' type, always beside the bed though!
In the morning, first thing, check the glass...yeah...I was a glass person, in retrospect, mother was clever, not making more washing than necessary. Anyway, the tooth was gone, and in its place, a shiny silver coin, in my day.
Anyhoo, I remember the my rewards went in an increasing amount; first tooth was a threepence, then sixpence, ('zac' we called them), then the shilling, then the florin, or two bob or two shillings as it was called.
Then it all stopped. Once the milk teeth were out, that was it!
No more rewards...just fear, pain and agony at the dentist.
What was your first dentist like?
Mine was horrible, but, he had an arsenal the kiddies could look at while waitng. Everything from a 22 bullet, up to a mortar! And, they all were still primed!!! "Don't pick them up kids, it might go off if you drop it!" That was all the warning we got, and were then left alone with them. No one ever took one however. Or dropped one I might add.
They used to sit on a bench, all lined up, in a small side room, from smallest to largest.
It took your mind off things, till he got you in his chair! He liked to be dramatic, so your tooth often ended up flying across the room, after he had put his knee in your chest, pretending to be yanking it out. He thought it was hilarious, as a wee mite, I was TERRIFIED!!!
You were then handed back your tooth to take home for the tooth fairy to collect. The old days of dentistry....the big drill, very slow and laborious, and it made your whole head vibrate...really...REALLY awful.....
Anyhoo...in a few hours, I will be in the chair again!!!!
And no...no tooth fairy for me anymore..
cheers

I can't remember my first dentist visit (thankfully, pain was bound to be involved), but I do remember my dad trying to yank out a wobbly tooth..eekkk!! He should have left it to the experts!!

yes my family has some hoor stories, especially my sister, who my mother treid to save on a trip to the dentist, by tying a strong thread around her wobbly tooth, and tying the other end to the door knob!! It didn't work, poor thing, she screamed her head off!
This bizarre practise was quite well known when I was a boy, I think it came from the depression, when no one could afford a dentist, its a bit like that today, as I just found out trying to get to one.
Anyhoo...in just one hour and fifty minutes from now, the horro show begins!!
cheers

well arn't you a lucky boy!! Two bucks no less! Actually, if you compare the buying power of a two dollar coin today, to that of a florin in my childhood, I think the florin would have better buying power!
Anyway, whatever you do, don't avoid regular check ups, every six months with a dentist. You may think all is well now, but things go slowly out of control, and as you age, it can turn into a disaster.
cheers and toofy grins to all.

that sounds like a horror show!
I was about to do a post, on my own experience yesterday with an extraction. Maybe it will open the doors for a few more to 'open wide' about their dental horror stories!
cheers
